Christianity Timeline
The Christianity Timeline really begins at the Creation. Christians would not exist without the long history of Judaism. God Created the World and all the people in it. How He did that and how long that took is not an issue. The beginning of everything living began with the touch of God. From there it was a very short time before the humanness of the human beings He created became apparent.
Read the Old Testament. The history of the world there. Look at the Bible as a Christian training manual. When you were in infancy God taught you right from wrong using blessings and punishment- positive and negative reinforcement. An infant does not have the capability to understand "why" in a complex way. Therefore immediate feedback is necessary. This is the time of Noah. God showed His power to destroy and to bless.
As a toddler you began to understand cause and effect. He chose Moses to inspire the people to follow Gods direction. When they did He took them away from pain and degradation to fertile land where they could flourish.
Next on the Christianity Timeline: As young children God gave us clear direction on how to behave. These are the ten commandments. Young children look for a leader to follow. God chose David and Solomon.
As an adolescent you must choose your own beliefs. God sent Isaiah the prophet with hope for a Savior. This is a critical piece of the Christianity Timeline. Read Isaiah. All of the life of Jesus and the circumstances of his death are written in the Book of Isaiah.
Throughout centuries God taught, punished, blessed, and warned the people to follow His rule book. But they could not. The book of Malachi is the last in the Old Testament. The time between the Old Testament and the New Testament involved 400 years. Here is that missing piece of the Christianity Timeline.
From 400 BC to 330 BC the people were ruled by the Persians. The Jewish leaders were allowed to continue their religious practices and even to have their own Jewish Government.
330 - 328 BC Alexander the Great conquered and ruled the east. He believed the Greek culture would unite the world, however he allowed the Jewish people to continue to follow the commandments.
320 - 200 BC The Egyptians again Ruled over the Jewish people.
200 - 160 BC The Egyptians were defeated by Antiochus and practicing Judaism is forbidden. The years of 330- 166 BC is called the Hellenistic Period. Further on the Christianity Timeline: 166 - 63 BC is the Hasmonean Period. This was a time of severe oppression for the people of God. Copies of the Scriptures were ordered to be destroyed and the laws of their rulers were strict and cruel. Then began the Roman Period which brings us to the fulfillment of the Christian Timeline. In the time of Jesus birth and throughout His lifetime the Jewish people were ruled by the Romans. The Jews were able to worship and were to follow the guidance of the religious leaders. With the addition of Jesus the whole basic knowledge of Judaism is called into question. No one responds well to change, especially at the foundation of their existence.
Belief in Jesus meant the end of the Jewish religion as they knew it. The end of judgment and death. It would mean a total change to the concept of life. From the time He was born Jesus' life was in jeopardy. His family hid Him in Egypt until Herod died. They then returned to Nazareth. To fulfill the prophecy given to Isaiah (40:3) John the baptist prepared the people for Jesus. John was the "voice calling in the desert prepare the way for the Lord." John baptized Jesus, his cousin, and then Jesus began his mission on the Christianity timeline. Jesus proclaimed that Jewish Law still remained. The laws- the ten commandments would be totally fulfilled by Him. That meant that Jesus would live as a human and never break any of the commandments. That was His mission. To live the life no human could, a perfect life without sin. Jesus shared God's words and the promise for the future. He healed, raised the dead, and forgave over and over again. Out of fear, the Jewish leaders began to manipulate the Roman rulers into getting rid of this Man who was bringing their beliefs into question. They had lost all control of the people. Jesus promised hope that one didn't need to die as a sinner. In Malachi 4:5 "See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes." Jesus explains John the Baptist was the return of Elijah.
Another critical event in the Christian timeline is that Jesus had to be crucified. He had be allowed to be tortured and ridiculed without protection. He was the sacrificial lamb. Read Isaiah 53:4-7. He died taking all the punishment you deserve. This took place in the spring of the year 30 AD. His death alone would have no meaning to us. Jesus appeared on earth after His death to be a real example of everlasting life. John 20:29 "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." And then Jesus was taken up into heaven. He was visibly accepted as God's Son. He promised the Holy Spirit would always be with us. John 14: 26 " But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."
And the Spirit guides you now. There have been many Christian leaders. St Paul was one of the first. He had passion for his message and held the people tightly to the commandments and laws. He inspired John, James, Jude, and Peter. Disciples who come to mind in this lifetime are Martin Luther King Jr, Billy Graham, Sister Theresa, and James Dobson. The continuation of the Christianity timeline is in your hands. Your faith and belief are examples to those around you and have a direct effect on those who don't believe.
