Meditation: The Stress Antidote

Meditation could be the solution to your stressful life.

When your body is under stress for any reason, physical, intellectual, or emotional it has a built in protection system. This is called the fight or flight response. In this mode your mind sends the danger message to the rest of your body. That signals the blood flow going to the unnecessary parts of your body to slow down.
You don’t have time to think (so very little blood goes to your brain) Adrenaline is released; the large muscle groups (legs, arms, and heart) are filled with blood. You literally become ready to run or do battle.

So what does that mean to you? Are you tired a lot of the time? Do you have difficulty with memory and processing thoughts, and are your decision making skills poor? It’s because your body is prepared to run or defend itself.

If you continue to live with your body all worked up you put stress on your heart, which will likely lead to high blood pressure, increasing your risk for a stroke and heart disease.

Information on these important womens health problems can be found here: Healthy Inspiration Relaxation is the only antidote.
If you are finding it difficult to release tension from your body with the breathing exercise (discussed in Meditation Step One) try this:

1.Start at your feet and tense those muscles as tightly as you can, then let go. (Just like you did with your hands in Step One)
2. Move up your body one group at a time until you end with your face muscles.

Practice quieting yourself, relaxing each part of you, and and deepening your breathing as you slow it down.

Listen to your body, and help it to relax and get plenty of oxygen. You are learning the practice of meditation.

Many of us have lived an anxious life for years. Consequently that is where your body naturally goes if you don’t work to relax it. Take time to notice when your body tells you it is preparing to fight and stop right then to calm and relax yourself. Only then can you choose to use your brain with a good supply of oxygen to make decisions. Only when you take time to shut down the fight or flight response can you find a life free of multiple health problems.

When you notice your body is tight choose to breathe and relax and experience a life free of stress. No, you won't always have a stress free life, but you are learning the tools and practicing to release it.
